Benan's Drums

I have what I think is a pretty extensive collection of drums. The table below shows pictures of some of my drums, descriptions of them, where I got them, and sound-bytes. Links at the bottom of this page will take you to pages 1 and 2 of my collection.

I bought this small djembe from White Raven Drum Works in Bridgewater Corners, VT, on the way back from a skiing trip in Killington. It got a wooden body and stands about 14 3/4" tall, with a 9" natural skin head.

I found this tiny ceramic doumbek in Bananas at Large in San Rafael, CA. It stands less than 8" tall, and has a 6 3/8" head. According to the markings on the inside, this Native American prayer drum was made in November of 2000 by Golden Eagle. I am a bit skeptical of it's origins, simply due to the fact that it's the only Native American goblet drum I've ever seen.

I stumbled across this riqq at, of all places, T J Max in Manchester, NH. For less than $20, it was a pretty good buy. It's abouty 10" across, and 2 3/8" deep. The zills are about 2 3/4 across.

I got this drum from The House of Musical Traditions while Aslahan and I were at the 2002 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival. I played it various times over two or three days before deciding to buy. It's hammered aluminum, has an 8" head, and stands 13 1/2" tall.
